As he got older it became obvious he was most suited to be an artist and so studied Fine Art as a career. Hanavan has been painting all his life. Hanavan takes his inspiration from the real world and he tries to paint subjects that look appealing as they already are, rather than attempt to improve on reality by consciously altering the way things look. In whatever subject he's painting Hanavan is usually trying to capture qualities of light and shadow. That has been consistent in his work for the last twenty years, just trying to get the light to look right. In love with the way the shadows of a tree fall across a wall and a sidewalk, Hanavn works at trying to translate that sort of light onto the canvas.
